"I can't say enough about what Kelly has done for my family. Navigating the world of special education can be overwhelming and was an emotional experience for me and my family. Kelly was able to bring an immediate sense of calm and organization, helping us clearly understand what our son was entitled to. Her positive attitude, coupled with her impressive expertise, helped us secure the services we needed to set my son up for success for years to come. I will forever be grateful for her guidance, availability at all times, and dedication to my family." -Lynnfield mother of two
"Very useful PD. Kelly is super nice, knowledgeable and has like a contagious passion about her work. Can she come work here - like as a permanent GLTS coach?
It was great that Kelly sent the PD slides as there are going to be an incredibly useful references for IEP planning / writing. She is super open and states that she is accessible if we have questions. I also enjoyed the classroom activity ideas that she shared as well. I want more PD (with her) for our entire department - to help us further with our IEP development, progress monitoring, and also for our entire faculty - to remind all of our teachers of the components / requirements of special education. So far, the PDs provided for Special Education have been awesome."
Kelly is awesome! It was very helpful and I plan on using her slideshow as a reminder/refresher as well. Very informative session yesterday.
I thought that the PD yesterday was fantastic! Kelly did a great job of keeping us engaged, which can be difficult on a zoom meeting and allowing us time to reflect on our own practices away from the screen too. I would also love to have her come in and present to the entire department - if we ever get back to face to face. I also think that she could be a valuable person to present to the general education staff as well - to explain to the time what their role in the process is. Sometimes coming from someone outside the building is what staff needs.
I enjoyed listening to Kelly. She had many best practices ideas and was able to break down how important it is to be explicit when writing goals for our students. I love how she had a Quizlet available, which was based on how well we know disabilities. She would be great teaching PD for our department. Definitely engaging.
Kelly was a very down to earth, realistic presenter. Because of her demeanor, our staff was able to ask difficult questions and show their vulnerability.
She was able to provide us with some concrete sentence frames that we could use immediately when constructing an IEP.
I would like to spend a little bit more time looking at and /or discussing examples of specifically designed instruction. I would love it if I could sit with her and she could look over some of my assignments and give me some feedback on those. I would also like to know how to write those specifically designed instruction examples into an IEP.
Overall, Kelly was a very easygoing: we were able to ask questions, feel comfortable admitting that you might not know some thing, and it is evident that she has experience in the classroom.
I really enjoyed working with her, thank you

This was the best PD I've ever attended." - Athol-Royalston Teacher

"I feel so much more prepared for facilitating meetings after Kelly's workshop. I can't wait to use the agendas she provided and the resources". EDCO participant
"Unlike other PD, Kelly was student focused and related first as a teacher. Her approach, humor and ability to relate is refreshing!" - Bedford Public School Teacher
"Working with Kelly Mertens over the past several years has been a gift for my family. She has developed amazing bonds with all three of my children- they trust her implicitly and she can give them advice about their learning that they actually listen to. They ask, "When is Kelly coming this week?" so they can share their struggles and achievements. My husband and I are forever grateful for the sound guidance she has given us in navigating the processes of special education and supports in the public school setting." - Danvers resident
"The beginning of my eighth grade year started off a little shaky. However I was able to find comfort and confidence having Mrs. Mertens as a teacher and mentor. She not only helped me in math, she honestly changed my life. Four years later, she is no longer my teacher but she continues to check in to see how I am doing and even remembers the little details I have told her. She has always encouraged me to do my best and to believe in myself, which has helped me to overcome all the obstacles in my life. I am very lucky to have Mrs. Mertens in my world. She is my greatest role model, and I hope to one day be a teacher and inspire my students just like she has inspired me". -Courtney Field, DHS class of 2017
"As a young teen with learning disabilities, having Mrs. Mertens as a mentor, teacher and tutor has provided me great success, with both my past and for my future. She motivated me and engaged me so that I was able to build better skills in a variety of learning areas. She is a great role model and support system and I am beyond thankful I have Mrs. Mertens in my life. Today I am able to overcome challenges that I face in my college classes because of the skills I learned from her. Her ability to teach me in a way I understood and thoughtful advice was so appreciated and still is today. She is one of the most memorable teachers I ever had because she put the time and effort into helping me and my peers every day. I credit her to where I'm at today because of her encouragement, patience and advice. I am forever thankful!" -Lea Tavares, DHS class of 2014.
